Frank Clark Scotland Neck to Chi-City

I am trying to locate a relative of one of my listed 3rd cousins. I will document my findings here, on this post.

Frank lived in Chicago, Cook, Illnois. He was said to have played the clarinet. His birthday is about 1900.

I first start with trying to find Frank living in Cook County. I find him on the 1940 census. He lives alone, at 404 East Forty Second Street, listed as Single. The 1940 census says that Frank lived in Norfolk, Va in the 1930 census. On the census, his occupation is listed as a “shine boy” at a Shining Parlor.

Frank fathered a child with a woman named, we will call her, “Sue”. I am documenting the connections so that I will be able to visually connect the dots to support our DNA relationship.

I actully looked up “Sue” on the 1940 census record. I find Sue living with her Parents on North Dayton Street in Chicago Cook, Illinois. She is listed as 12 in 1940 and her and Franks son was concived in 1944, which would put Sue at 16 years old.

Assuming Sue’s family was living in the same house as they were in 1940, in 1944. I wanted to see the distance of how far away Sue’s address was from Franks Address. Ther are 24 minutes away with traffic, in the current day.

I start looking for Frank in the 1930′ census which says he lived in Norfolk, Va before coming to Chicago. Trying to retrace his footsteps back to Scotland Neck, where I belive he was born.
I can’t find him on a 1930’s census but I think I do find him on the 1920’s census.

I find “a” Frank Clark, living with a Lucy Tyler. It says that Lucy is his Grandmother. Franks birthdate is listed as 1896, they live in Norfolk, Va area but all of the family was born in North Carolina. It’s says Frank is married but I don’t see a wife listed. I see his biological relatives living in the home.

Lucy Tyler 59 is the head
Frank is 24, listed as her Grandson
Nancy is her Daughter, 35, Wilson is listed as Granddaughter(typo)
Patsie granddaughter
Rebeccas Daughter in law.

So I keep looking for Frank, I can not find Frank on the 1910 census.

Next is 1900. I search for Norfolk, Va, nothing, I next search for Scotland Neck where our connection is rooted and I come up with Frank Clark.

I find the same Lucy living with frank in 1920 that I do here in 1910. Ancestry transcribed the realtionship wrong, if you look at the actual census. Lucy is the head of household listed as Franks Aunt.

Lucy has her sister name niny( proably Nancy) Clark living with her, 25 years old with her son Frank Clark listed at 4 years old.

Because Frank is so young and her only child I am going to assume I won’t find any more records of Frank and Niny together, tracing backwards.

I want to see, if I can connect, Lucy and Niny, and sister Louisa living together as sisters on a record living with thier parents. in maybe the 1880 census

This will have to be continued as I have hit some dead ends.

I will add it was very common for African Americans to flee the south due to harsh social living conditions and just a chance to better the family unit. The whole family migrated north to the next state for a better future, Frank seemed to want to go further North for more opportunity.

  1. Aloha. I am Kim Young‘s older sister, Lee Young. I am inspired and intrigued by your research! You do have some facts very accurately documented. Others are more vague, evidently due too records and record keeping of the era. I would love to hear more FAQs you have researched & discovered. I may be able to fill in a few blanks for you as the oldest child in our family. We would both benefit by learning more. Lee Young
